Project Management Certificate


This certificate provides an introduction to project management, an ad hoc technique for accomplishing specialized missions or work, such as: research and development studies, consulting projects, reorganizations efforts, implementation of total quality management, installation of new equipment, advertising campaigns, construction, or other one-time efforts. Project management issues such as planning and controlling large-scale projects, the use information systems project management principles and strategies, and the development and use of collaboration technologies to support project teams are explored. There is focus on leadership in project management issues including team development and team selection where different types of teams are explored, with emphasis on problem-solving teams (e.g., process improvement teams, re-engineering teams, special project teams). Issues of selection, role assignment, team facilitation, group dynamics, conflict, and empowerment are also explored.

This certificate provides an introduction to Project Management Institute (PMI) resources and helps familiarize students with professional certifications, such as the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) and Project Management Professional (PMP), offered by PMI.

The certificate is open to all students. It may be earned in conjunction with a degree program or as a stand-alone credential.  (Students pursuing a stand-alone credential are not eligible for federal financial aid and may not participate in Commencement.)  After the student applies for graduation, the certificate is posted to the student’s official transcript and an official diploma stating the area of the certificate is issued.

  • A minimum of 9 credits in the program must be completed at UM-Flint.
  • Coursework older than 3 years must be reviewed by the School of Management for content alignment with current certificate requirements.
